CBD vape in Australia: what it is and the CBD oil alternative in Australia

4 June 2026

CBD vape in Australia explained: composition, TGA regulatory reality, and the CBD oil alternative available in Australia from CBD Oil Australia. No health claims.

No CBD vape product has been approved by the TGA for over-the-counter sale in Australia — and the broader vaping landscape changed significantly in 2023 when nicotine e-cigarettes moved to prescription-only supply through pharmacies. CBD Oil Australia does not sell vape products. We sell CBD oil — hemp-derived cannabidiol in an oral liquid format — shipped nationally from Sydney to Adelaide and everywhere between. This page explains the regulatory position on CBD vaping, how the product category works, and what the CBD oil alternative at CBD Oil Australia actually contains.

CBD vape in Australia: the regulatory picture, how the product category works, and the CBD oil alternative from CBD Oil Australia

This is an information page about a product format we do not stock. The goal is to give a clear national picture of where CBD vaping sits under Australian law, describe the product category factually, compare it to CBD oil on measurable grounds, and show what CBD Oil Australia offers customers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide instead. No health claims about either format.

The Australian regulatory landscape for CBD vaping

The regulatory picture around CBD vaping in Australia runs through two separate but intersecting frameworks, and understanding both matters before drawing any conclusion about what is available through a legal channel.

The 2023 vaping changes. From 1 January 2024, nicotine vaping products could only be supplied in Australia through pharmacies, to customers holding a valid prescription. General retail sale of nicotine e-cigarettes was ended by amendments to the Therapeutic Goods Act, backed by tightened import controls. These rules target nicotine specifically — CBD and nicotine are different compounds — but a CBD vape product uses a vaping device, and vaping devices and liquids also fall within the scope of those regulatory changes depending on their composition and classification.

The TGA position on CBD. Cannabidiol in Australia is a scheduled substance regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. In February 2021, the TGA rescheduled low-dose CBD — up to 150mg per day — from Schedule 4 (prescription) to Schedule 3 (pharmacist-only), opening a theoretical over-the-counter pathway. To use that pathway, a product must be listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). As of 2026, no CBD vape product holds an ARTG listing for over-the-counter supply. That pathway remains unavailable for this product format.

The combined position. A CBD vaping product sits at the intersection of CBD scheduling and the rules governing vaping devices and liquids. Neither framework provides a clear, approved over-the-counter route for this format in Australia. Various CBD vape products are sold online from overseas sources; their legal classification in Australia depends on composition, labelling, and how they are categorised — which varies by seller. The TGA website is the authoritative source for what is and is not approved. This page does not constitute legal advice.

In short: across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and the rest of Australia, there is no TGA-approved CBD vape product available through a clear over-the-counter retail pathway.

What is a CBD vape product?

A CBD vape product is hemp-derived cannabidiol formulated for inhalation via a device that heats the liquid to vapour temperature. The cannabinoid at the centre — cannabidiol — is the same compound found in CBD oil. The format differs in three concrete ways: the carrier liquid, the delivery route, and the equipment needed.

Composition. The CBD extract — isolate (pure cannabidiol), broad-spectrum (multiple cannabinoids, THC removed) or full-spectrum (whole-plant, trace THC under 0.3%) — is suspended in a carrier suited to heating. Common carriers are propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG) or a form of MCT oil specifically formulated for vaporisation. This is not the same formulation as a sublingual CBD oil, where the carrier is a food-grade oil for oral use.

Device requirement. A CBD vape cannot be used without a compatible heating device — a vape pen, cartridge, or pod system. Disposable devices come pre-filled. Refillable systems pair a separate battery and cartridge. The device heats the liquid to produce vapour without burning. It is an integral part of the product, whether built in or purchased separately.

Delivery route. The vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs. This is what distinguishes the format from every oral CBD product. The cannabinoid reaches the body via the respiratory system rather than the digestive tract. This is the defining compositional difference, not a quality judgement about either route.

The CBD milligram figure and the spectrum (isolate, broad-spectrum, full-spectrum) are labelled on CBD vape products following the same convention as CBD oil labels — the same two data points that describe every bottle of hemp-derived CBD.

CBD vape vs CBD oil: a direct comparison

Both product types deliver hemp-derived cannabidiol. The differences are factual and measurable.

Delivery route. CBD oil is taken orally: held under the tongue for sublingual absorption, or swallowed and absorbed through the digestive system. A CBD vape product is heated in a device and the vapour inhaled. These are mechanically distinct routes, not two versions of the same action.

Carrier and formulation. Our CBD oil uses coconut-derived MCT as its carrier — a food-grade, neutral oil selected for oral use. CBD vape liquid uses carriers designed to withstand and vapourise at elevated temperature: propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, or heat-appropriate MCT. A standard CBD oil is not a safe substitute in a vaping device; a vape liquid is not appropriate for oral use. The formulations are specific to their delivery routes.

Equipment. CBD oil is self-contained: bottle and dropper, nothing else required. A CBD vape requires a compatible heating device to function at all.

Regulatory lane in Australia. An oral CBD oil sold as a composition-described product operates in a different regulatory space from a CBD vape product, which must navigate both CBD scheduling and the vaping-device framework. The regulatory pathway for over-the-counter CBD oil in this category is more clearly defined than for CBD vaping in Australia at this point.

Neither format is superior. They are different products that share a cannabinoid. The question is which format fits the buyer's circumstances, bearing in mind the regulatory realities described above.

Common questions about CBD vape in Australia

Is CBD vape legal to buy in Australia? No CBD vape product holds a current ARTG listing for over-the-counter sale in Australia. What is the difference between CBD vape and CBD oil? Same hemp-derived cannabinoid — cannabidiol — different delivery format.
