CBG oil explained — and where to buy it in Australia

4 June 2026

CBG oil is cannabigerol, a minor hemp cannabinoid in an MCT carrier. What it is, how it compares to CBD and CBN, and where to buy it in Australia.

CBG oil is available online across Australia — but it is rarer than CBD oil because the hemp plant produces far less of it. CBD Oil Australia stocks cannabigerol oil alongside our CBD range and ships to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and everywhere in between. This page explains the plant biology behind the scarcity, what separates CBG from CBD and CBN by composition, and exactly what is in our bottles.

Why CBG is harder to find than CBD

Every hemp plant follows the same chemistry. Early in growth it produces cannabigerolic acid — CBGA — as its first major cannabinoid compound. Plant enzymes then convert the bulk of that CBGA into the acidic precursors of cannabidiol (CBD), THC, and CBC as the plant matures toward harvest. By the time the plant is ready to pick, most of the original CBGA has been redirected into those other pathways. What remains unconverted is the fraction that becomes cannabigerol in the finished plant.

That is why growers and formulators describe CBG as the "mother cannabinoid" — it is the compound from which the plant chemistry builds the others. The name refers to position in the biosynthetic sequence, not to any property of the finished oil. The practical consequence is a supply problem: a mature hemp crop contains only a small percentage of CBG by weight, far less than the CBD that dominates most extracts. Reaching the same milligram figure on a label therefore requires more raw plant material, and that cost is reflected honestly in the price. When you see CBG oil priced above a CBD oil of the same volume, it is the scarcity of the raw cannabinoid at work, nothing else.

What cannabigerol actually is

Cannabigerol is one of more than a hundred cannabinoids identified in Cannabis sativa, the plant family that includes both hemp and other varieties. It is classified as a minor cannabinoid — that word "minor" describing its concentration in the plant, not its standing as a compound.

Chemically, CBG is a neutral cannabinoid rather than an acidic one. CBGA, the acidic form it comes from, is the branch point in the plant's metabolic map: heat or time converts CBGA to CBG, while separate enzyme pathways convert CBGA into the acids that eventually become CBD and THC. This makes cannabigerol genuinely distinct from CBD at the molecular level — the two share a plant family and a biosynthetic ancestor, but they are separate compounds with different structures.

CBG versus CBD and CBN: a composition comparison

Shoppers across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide often arrive at this page asking how CBG oil fits next to the other cannabinoid oils we sell. The clearest answer is a side-by-side look at what each oil contains, not what it is claimed to do.

CBG oil is built around cannabigerol extracted into a neutral MCT carrier — one compound, one carrier, nothing else. It is neither a broad-spectrum blend nor a whole-plant extract; it carries a specific minor cannabinoid in a measured concentration.

CBD oil comes in two forms at CBD Oil Australia. Our full-spectrum CBD oil uses a whole-plant extraction that keeps cannabidiol alongside the plant's natural complement of minor cannabinoids and terpenes, including a legal trace of THC at under 0.3%. Our broad-spectrum CBD oil takes that same extraction through an additional step that removes the THC, delivering a 0% THC profile while retaining the rest of the plant profile. You can compare both at their individual pages or browse the full range.

CBN oil is different again. Cannabinol is the cannabinoid that forms as hemp ages — it is an oxidation product of THC over time, rather than a compound the fresh plant manufactures directly. Our CBN oil is supplied as a THC-free isolate in the same MCT carrier and the same 50ml bottle format as the rest of the range.

The line-up: CBD is the most abundant and comes whole-plant or THC-free; CBG is a separate minor compound that the plant makes less of; CBN is the one tied to ageing. All three share the same carrier and bottle size, which makes comparing concentrations and prices straightforward.

What is in our CBG oil

Here is the factual specification — only what appears on the label or in the Certificate of Analysis.

Each bottle is 50ml of hemp extract held in a coconut-derived MCT carrier oil. The number on the front of the bottle is the total cannabigerol content in milligrams. Our range runs from the 1000mg CBG oil — the entry-strength option, starting from $89.95 — up through the 3000mg CBG oil and the 6000mg CBG oil, each putting progressively more cannabinoid into the same 50ml volume.

Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory. A Certificate of Analysis confirming the cannabinoid figures and the THC content is available on request for any batch. The oils are imported from EU Labs in Amsterdam and shipped from within Australia, so delivery to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide does not cross an international border. This is an over-the-counter hemp oil sold by composition; it is not a prescription product.

Reading the label: strength and concentration

Two numbers on any cannabinoid bottle do most of the work. The total milligrams figure is how much cannabigerol is present across the full 50ml bottle. Divide that by 50 to find the milligrams per millilitre — the concentration per serving. A 3000mg bottle delivers 60mg per millilitre; a 1000mg bottle delivers 20mg per millilitre. The oil itself does not change between strengths — only the concentration does.

Beyond the milligram count, confirm the carrier oil (ours is coconut-derived MCT) and that a COA is available. The COA is where the on-label figure is independently verified; without it, the number on the front is unsubstantiated. Our guide to using CBD oil walks through the mechanics of a dropper bottle and measuring a serving — the same method applies to CBG oil.

The choice of strength is a question of budget and the concentration you prefer. We do not publish recommended amounts for any condition.

CBG oil and Australian law

Australia regulates cannabinoid products at the national level through the Therapeutic Goods Administration, not separately by state or territory. The TGA sets the framework that determines which cannabinoid products may be sold over the counter, the THC thresholds that apply, and the conditions of sale. That single national framework means the rules for buyers in Sydney are the same as those for buyers in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, or Adelaide.

Our oils are sold to adults aged 18 and over, described strictly by composition, and the THC content of every batch is confirmed by the independent COA. For the current national position on cannabidiol and related cannabinoids, the TGA website is the authoritative source.

FAQ

What makes CBG different from CBD? They are two distinct cannabinoids from the same plant. CBD (cannabidiol) is the most abundant compound in hemp; CBG (cannabigerol) is a minor cannabinoid the plant produces in far smaller quantities. They have different molecular structures and come in separate oil formulations.

Why is CBG oil more expensive than CBD oil? Because hemp produces very little cannabigerol by weight. More plant material is needed to reach the same milligram figure on the label, which raises the cost of production. It is a supply fact about the cannabinoid, not a premium for any property of the oil.

Does CBG oil contain THC? The THC content depends on the specific product and batch, which is why each batch carries a Certificate of Analysis confirming the figure. Request the COA for any batch before you buy.

Is CBG oil legal in Australia? Cannabinoid products are governed by Australia's national framework via the TGA. Our oils are sold over the counter to adults 18+, described by composition. Check the TGA for the current national position.

Where can I buy CBG oil in Australia? Online from CBD Oil Australia. We post to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and nationwide. See the shop to compare every strength and price.
